Description
Ölstadsjön is a nature reserve and one of the best sites for dabbling ducks in the municipality of Finspång. Although not nearly as good as the sites on the Östgöta plain Garganey, Common Teal, Mallard, Eurasian Wigeon and Northern Shoveler have all been sighted. The lake has a quite restricted area of open water so the amounts are often lacking. Other common ducks of the diving kind have also been observed. The lake was once known for its population of breeding Slavonian Grebe, and even Black-necked Grebe although they are both now gone. Around the lake relatively large amounts of geese often rest all seasons except winter. Most common are Barnacle Goose, Canada Goose and Greylag Goose, although Greater White-fronted Goose also have been sighted. Great Egret has been sighted and Grey Heron is common.
The area around Ölstadsjön is rich in birds of prey with wetland birds like Western Marsh Harrier, Common Buzzard, Rough-legged Buzzard, White-tailed Eagle, and Hen Harrier often beein observed along with visitors from the forest like Sparrowhawk, Eurasian Goshawk and Osprey.
On the field Eurasian Skylark, Green Sandpiper, European Goldfinch, Common Starling Northern Lapwing, Meadow Pipit and Linnet are often seen. Even Common Quail has been heard. In the lake some gulls and tern are often sighted.
In the reeds Water Rail, Reed Bunting, Great Bittern (not often), Sedge Warbler, and Reed Warbler are observed.
