Shallow bay which is part of the larger Sundsvall bay. Its large coastal meadows and bird cobs make it an excellent place for birding.
Bergafjärden consists of a large coastal meadow in the middle and higher hill/mountainous areas to the north and south. Most of the coastal meadow has been turned into a large beach for tourists but there are parts untouched in the northern part of the bay. Over the years 207 species have been recorded. During winter ice-free periods are often birdrich although the shallow waters often makes it frozen during winters. Mute Swan, Whooper Swan, Smew, Mallard, Goosander, Common Goldeneye, European Herring Gull, Common Gull and Tufted Duck are the common seafowl during this period. Among other birds Greylag Goose, Grey Heron, Great Grey Shrike, and White-tailed Eagle are uncommon. Wintering woodpeckers like Grey-headed Woodpecker, Eurasian Green Woodpecker, and Eurasian Three-toed Woodpecker can be found most years. Some years Common Scoter, Red-breasted Merganser, Long-tailed Duck, Velvet Scoter, Common Pochard and Grey Heron also winter. In the forest most of common forest birds can be found. During invasions Pine Grosbeak and Two-barred Crossbill can be found.
During spring most of the previously mentioned waterfowl become more common and in March many geese arrive. Larger amounts of Greylag Goose (100 at most), and Canada Goose (100 at most) can be found. Often along it smaller amounts of Barnacle Goose and sometimes Taiga Bean Goose, Greater White-fronted Goose, and even Lesser White-fronted Goose (only very rarley). Among water fowl, Whooper Swan (at most 300), Common Goldeneye (at most 300), and Common Teal (at most 90) along with smaller amounts of Velvet Scoter, Common Eider, Red-breasted Merganser, Goosander, Smew, Mallard, Northern Shoveler and Eurasian Wigeon. Uncommon ducks in the area are Gadwall, Northern Pintail, and Garganey.
During spring many waders can be found. Most common among these are Common Redshank, Wood Sandpiper, Common Greenshank, Little Ringed Plover, Eurasian Woodcock, Common Sandpiper, Eurasian Oystercatcher, Green Sandpiper, Eurasian Curlew, Common Ringed Plover and Ruff. More rarely Bar-tailed Godwit, Whimbrel, European Golden Plover Spotted Redshank, Dunlin and Temminck's Stint can be found. During perfect weather even Red Knot, Sanderling, Red Knot, Little Stint, Broad-billed Sandpiper or Curlew Sandpiper can be found although these are more common during autumn (while still being very rare).
During this period common terns (Arctic Tern, Common Tern, Caspian Tern), common gulls (European Herring Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Common Gull and Black-headed Gull) and sometimes the rare Little Gull is found. At bergafjärden notable breeding birds are Great Crested Grebe (some years, rare), Common Eider, Velvet Scoter, Barnacle Goose, Eurasian Kestrel, Slavonian Grebe, Caspian Tern, Arctic Tern and Common Tern. During early autumn large amounts of waterfowl, geese and waders can be found although these are often more numerous than in spring and arctic waders like Broad-billed Sandpiper are more common during autumn than spring. Most waders are found during august.
