Surprisingly bird-rich walk on paved roads, unpaved roads and narrow paths between the hotels of Nilaveli Beach and Nilaveli Lagoon.
Around the Nilaveli Beach Hotel there are some beautiful patches of mature forest mixed with small-scale arable fields. The woods and the fields are both rich in birds, just like the adjacent Nilaveli Lagoon with its mudflats and mangroves. A 4 km circular walk during the early hours of the day will bring you lots of birds and quite nice species. Among the birds you can expect are Malabar Pied-Hornbill, Blue-faced Malkoha, Jerdon's Nightjar, Great Stone-Curlew, Eurasian Hoopoe, Indian Roller, Brown-headed Barbet, Sri Lanka Green-Pigeon, Black-hooded Oriole, Shikra, Jerdon's Bushlark, White-browed Bulbul and Purple Sunbird.
Nilaveli Beach Hotel is located 15 km north of Trincomalee. You can easily get there by bus, tuktuk or car. Press P in the map for directions. The walk is easy, but how far you can explore the Nilaveli Lagoon and the mangroves depends on the water level.
