Description

In the north-eastern part of the province of Zamora and in the middle of Tierra de Campos lies the collection of lakes, Las Lagunas de Villafáfila, one of the most important wetlands of northern Spain and, undoubtedly, the most popular area for aquatic, steppe and migratory birds in Castilla y León. Lagunas de Villafáfila is a lagoon complex in the middle of a steppe landscape with multiple observation points and various ecosystems. It has the largest breeding population of Great Bustard in the Iberian Peninsula, it is a very important wintering area for aquatic and waders and offers very interesting birding during spring and autumn migration. But in summer it depends very much on the water level, if you see many birds. It is highly advisable to request information from the Casa del Parque (Carretera de Villalpando Km. 1,5, 49136 Villafáfila, Zamora telephone 980 586 046) about the water levels since the lagoons dry out naturally during the summer period.

Access

The Visitor Center (La Casa del Parque) is located on the road that joins Villafáfila to Tapioles, just 1.5 km from the town center of Villafáfila. This is a good starting point if you visit for the first time. The reserve has several observatories in the natural lagoons. Note: Most years during the summer, the lagoons dry out completely. If that is the case you can use the observatories of the Casa del Parque. In these there is always birds to see because water is maintained artificially during the summer season.
