One of the main viewpoints of Monfragüe National Park, overlooking the Tietar river with cork oak forests on the other side of the reservoir.
La Higuerilla is a great spot to look for birds of prey. In 2024 I found 3 different Eurasian Black Vulture nests in the oaks on the other side of the river, although they require some dilligent scanning to be found. Moreover, Spanish Eagle breeds about 2 kilometres North of here and regularly passes over this viewpoint. Also easily seen in spring and summer are Black Kite, Short-toed Snake Eagle and Booted Eagle.
Be sure to check the riverbanks for fishing Black Stork. On- and around the river Grey Heron, Little Egret and Great Cormorant are present most of the time, as well as Purple Heron sometimes. Pay attention to the calls of Red-legged Partridge, which often can be found in the scrubland or even crossing the road.
La Higuerilla is easily reached from Villareal de San Carlos. It is the third viewpoint (on the left side of the road) after passing the Torrejon-Tietar dam. You can park next to the viewpoint. Press P on the map for directions.
