Beautiful botanical garden on a hill above the ocean. The garden attracts birds all year round. Best place in Tenerife to see Eurasian Hoopoe up close.
The Palmetum is a 12-hectare botanical garden in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife that specialises in palm trees. The garden was started in 1995 on a former landfill and only opened to the public in 2014. The valuable palm collection has about 600 species of palms and it is focused on the ones native to world islands. All gardens are maintained with no pesticides and no fertilizers.
The gardens include a large system of waterfalls, streams and ponds. This is very attractive for birds and many birds can be easily seen in the Palmetum. A couple of Eurasian Hoopoe breed in the area and are not shy at all. If you are lucky they drop to the ground right at your feet. Other interesting birds that you can encounter are Black-crowned Night Heron, Long-eared Owl, Grey Wagtail, Little Egret, Greenfinch, Barbary Partridge, European Turtle Dove and Spanish Sparrow. The garden attracts birds all year round, and sometimes rarities during migration.
The Palmetum is located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife next to the César Manrique Maritime Park. The botanical garden is easy accessible on foot from the city center (2 km). With public transport: take the bus and get off at bus station “Intercambiador” which is close to the Palmetum. If you arrive by car: in front of the entrance of the Palmetum is a big free parking. Click on the P in the map for directions. Opening hours from 10:00 to 18:00 (gates close at 17:00). The admission price is € 6 (2023).
