This canyon of the river Riaza has vertical walls up to 150 meters and houses about 200 pairs of Griffon Vulture.
El parque natural de la Hoces del Río Riaza is a protected nature reserve. From the Linares reservoir dam, the Riaza river has excavated a limestone canyon with vertical walls up to 150 meters. An important colony of Griffon Vulture nests there. In a widening of the canyon are the solitary Romanesque remains of the hermitage of Ermita del Casuar. From the Ermita del Causar onwards the river has meadows until it reaches the town of Montejo de la Vega. Here is also the raptor refuge, created in 1974 by WWF. Various species of birds also winter in the Linares del Arroyo reservoir. You can also visit the town of Maderuelo. Among the birds that can be spotted in the area are Griffon Vulture, Egyptian Vulture, Eurasian Kestrel, Short-toed Snake Eagle, Red-legged Partridge, Red-billed Chough, Eagle Owl, Blue Rock Thrush, Grey Wagtail and Crag Martin.
