Observatory high above the big reservoir of El Limonero. Beautiful views and good chances for observing birds.
The Limonero reservoir is a reservoir located north of Malaga and has a length of 5 km. The reservoir regulates the Guadalmedina River and serves as a source of supply for the city of Malaga. You can watch the reservoir from above from the observatory where you can see almost the entire reservoir. Although it is somewhat far from the area closest to the dam, where the gulls are usually located, one of the main attractions of the environment in terms of bird watching. Large flocks of gulls visit the reservoir often and spend quite a bit of time there. Another good place to spot birds is the dam itself. Another option is a hike around the reservoir (about 7 km). Among the birds you can see in the area are Osprey, Short-toed Snake Eagle, Booted Eagle, Common Kingfisher, Little Ringed Plover, Great Cormorant, Common Raven, Eurasian Hoopoe, Yellow-legged Gull, Black-headed Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull and Little Egret.
You can visit the observatory that gives a wide overview over the reservoir. A good spot to observe birds of prey. The other option is to make a 7 km long circular walk around the El Limonero reservoir (see the map). The walking route gets you closer to the reservoir and the birds of the surroundings. The route runs through unregulated terrain, so it is advisable to follow the route on the map to avoid getting lost and to be able to complete the route safely.
