Descrizione
In Škocjanski Zatok Nature Reserve since 2001 a total of 259 different bird species have been recorded on this protected area of 122,7 hectares. Up to 50 species of breeding birds have been recorded at the reserve so far, although the exact number varies from year to year. There are two separate areas you can visit: a brackish lagoon and a freshwater marsh. In the brackish lagoon you can see birds like Fraticello, Sterna comune, Fratino, Avocetta and Cavaliere d'Italia. The freshwater marsh offers an excellent breeding habitat for several species which are rare breeders in Slovenia, such as Tarabusino, Porciglione, Beccamoschino and Airone rosso, the latter nesting only here and nowhere else in the country. Also you can often see Marangone minore and Falco di palude. The dense reedbeds and waterside bushes are occupied by many pairs of Forapaglie comune, Cannaiola, Cannareccione and Usignolo di fiume.
In winter the reserve hosts large numbers of waterbirds. Many ducks, geese and grebes, but also small flocks of Pendolino, Migliarino di palude and Basettino. The wet meadows are a favoured feeding area of Beccaccino, Chiurlo maggiore and Spioncello. But there are many more birds you can encounter, see the birdlist below.
