The estuary of the Lima river has approximately 450 hectares of flooded land and about 200 hectares of surrounding fields and forests.
The Foz do Lima is an estuary that attracts many birds, with the presence of a considerable number of species during most of the year, especially the important populations of water birds that take refuge and feed here during the winter. Among the birds you can encounter are Bukoč, Eja Močvarica, Veliki Pozviždač, Žličarka, Krivokljuna Prutka, Kokošica, Vodomar, Mali Gnjurac, Common Waxbill, Šivalica and Crnoglavi Batić.
On the south bank of the river, next to the village of Darque, you get a good perspective on the islands in the middle of the river and there are some areas of sandy shores that are worth to check out. Another good area are the lagoons of the Veiga de São Simão (see the map).
