The parking lot for trips further south along Jørholmen is a great place to see smaller birds, woodpeckers and ducks and herons in the bay to the east.
Søndre Bjanes is a beautiful, elevated spot with a view of the Øyeren delta to the west and south. A landscape of fields, trees and bushes makes it a good habitat for birds such as European Goldfinch, Yellowhammer and tits. Woodpeckers ( Great Spotted Woodpecker, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Eurasian Green Woodpecker and Black Woodpecker) thrive in the nearby forests. To the east lies the bay Monsrudvika where you may see Grey Heron and in the spring and fall migration: waders and ducks. Note that during mosquito season (after mid May) bugs can be an annoyance.
Access to Søndre Bjanes is by car, or possibly walking/biking from the closest bus stops near Riddersand skole (2,5 km away). There is a gravel parking lot with room for about 20 cars. The parking can be busy during peak hiking hours around 11-12 on Saturday/Sunday. Click on the P in the map for directions to the parking. Exploring further south you will have to go on foot/bike.
