Roosting and nesting site of Nankeen Night-Heron, which only recently started to establish in New Zealand, in the back of a cafe.
The Nankeen Night-Heron, only recently established in New Zealand and there known as Nankeen Night Heron, is resident only along the Whanganui River. This birdingplace, a cafe in Upokongaro, is the best place to find them as they have taken residecent in trees in the back of the cafe. The helpful cafe personal will point out the trees to you. Outside of opening hours, the birds might be observed leaving the roost and fly towards the river on the other side of the road. It is also worth to have a look at the river, from the other side of the cafe or the cycle bridge a few meters to the South, as you might spot a New Zealand Falcon.
Upokongaro is located along State Highway 4, about a 15 min drive North of Whanganui. The cafe Behind The Door On 4 can hardly be missed, though look up the opening hours beforehand (as of writing this, 9am - 3.30pm all week). The trees are located in the North-Eastern corner and Eastern side of the cafe garden.
