Description
The forest around the Oude Eendenkooi (old duck decoy) provides shelter for birds. The old trees give a fairytale atmosphere. The forest around the former duck decoy is distinguished from the other forests on the island of Vlieland by its capricious oaks, tall ferns and a loud croaking of frogs in summer. The old duck decoy is particularly rich in birds with species such as Icterine Warbler, Little Grebe, Water Rail, Eurasian Coot, Tufted Duck and Eurasian Moorhen. Occasionally a Common Kingfisher can be seen en during migration sometimes Yellow-browed Warbler. And with luck a rare vagrant.

Nederlands: Mooie, rustige bosrijke plek voor vogels om te schuilen voor de noordenzeewind. Het bos rondom de eendenkooi geeft beschutting voor alle watervogels. De oude bomen geven een sprookjesachtige sfeer. Het bos rondom de voormalige eendenkooi onderscheidt zich van de andere bossen op Vlieland door de grillige eiken, hoge varens en in de zomer een hard gekwaak van kikkers. De oude eendenkooi is bijzonder vogelrijk met soorten als spotvogel, dodaars, waterral, meerkoet, kuifeend en waterhoen. Af en toe is er een ijsvogel te zien. En in de trektijd soms een bladkoning. En soms een zeldzame dwaalgast.

Access
Vlieland can be reached by ferry from Harlingen. Several boats leave per day and the crossing takes about an hour and a half (see link for ferry tickets below). The old duck decoy is located between Pad van 20 and the Posthuys and is sheltered in an old forest. You can easily cycle there via the Postweg. The walk of 700 meters around the duck decoy itself is only possible on foot.

The Oude Eendenkooi was built in 1891. The builders dug a rectangular pool of 20 by 55 meters, with a catch pipe in each corner. Trees, shrubs and reed mats in the corners of the pool provided the necessary shelter. Until 1910 ducks were caught in the Oude Eendenkooi, after which it became a nature reserve. A lush oak forest was created with in the wetter parts mainly birch and many birds.

Nederlands: De Oude Eendenkooi werd in 1891 aangelegd. De bouwers groeven er een rechthoekige plas van 20 bij 55 meter, met in iedere hoek een vangpijp. Bomen, struiken en rietmatten in de hoeken van de plas zorgden voor de nodige beschutting. Tot 1910 werden er eenden gevangen in de Oude Eendenkooi, daarna werd het een natuurgebied. Er ontstond een weelderig eikenbos met in de nattere delen vooral berk en dus veel vogels.
