Description
Where the nature reserve Ingendael is now located, potatoes and beets were still growing 25 years ago. After the purchase of this area in 1996, the development of a natural stream valley landscape was started. Grazing with Galloway cattle and Konik horses has created a rugged and varied terrain. Largely open, but hawthorn thickets can also be seen in all kinds of places. On the north side is a depression that has developed into a swamp. You can come anywhere in the area, a good example of nature for a stroll. The river Geul meandering through the area is home to birds such as Grey Wagtail and Common Kingfisher. The forests on the hillside are very rich in birdlife because of the old trees and the variety in the forest. Characteristic are the different species of woodpeckers, the Eurasian Nuthatch and the Spotted Flycatcher.

Nederlands: Ingendael is een aantrekkelijk natuurgebied waar je vanuit Valkenburg zo naartoe loopt. Waar nu het natuurgebied Ingendael ligt, groeiden 25 jaar geleden nog aardappelen en bieten. Na aankoop in 1996 van dit gebied is de ontwikkeling van een natuurlijk beekdallandschap ingezet. Dankzij begrazing met Galloway-runderen en Konikpaarden is een ruig en gevarieerd terrein ontstaan. Grotendeels open, maar op allerlei plekken is ook meidoornstruweel te zien. Aan de noordzijde ligt een laagte die zich tot een moeras heeft ontwikkeld. U mag overal in het gebied komen, een mooi voorbeeld van struinnatuur. Bij het door gebied meanderende Geul huizen vogels als grote gele kwikstaart en ijsvogel. De bossen op de heuvelrand zijn zeer vogelrijk door de oude bomen en en de afwisseling in het bos. Kenmerkend zijn de vele soorten spechten, de boomklever en de grauwe vliegenvanger.

Easy to reach on foot from Valkenburg. Or you can park at car park P3, Joseph Corneli Allee 1, Valkenburg. The map shows a walk of 4 km, but there are numerous connecting trails in the area to extend the walk. The valley floor of the Geul can be very wet and the slopes with loess and marl can be slippery. So put on sturdy footwear.

Nederlands: Gemakkelijk te voet bereikbaar vanuit Valkenburg. Parkeren kan op parkeerplaats P3, Joseph Corneli Allee 1, Valkenburg. Op de kaart zie je een wandeling van 4 km, maar er zijn talloze wandelpaden in het gebied om de wandeling mee te verlengen. De dalbodem van de Geul kan erg nat zijn en de hellingen met löss en mergel kunnen glibberig zijn. Dus trek stevige schoeisel aan.
