The Gouwzee is located between the dike between the former island of Marken and the mainland. It is a prime area for ducks, especially in winter.
In 1975 a dike was built to the island of Marken. This created the Gouwzee, a shallow water in which waterfowl can rest and forage in the shelter of the dike. This is a top spot to watch ducks, especially in winter. At first glance it usually looks like a mass of ducks and Eurasian Coot, but if you scan the mass of ducks you often discover nice duck species like Red-crested Pochard, Smew, Red-breasted Merganser, Goosander, Greater Scaup, Common Pochard, Eurasian Wigeon, Common Goldeneye and Tufted Duck. There is also a chance of groups of wintering Snow Bunting on the dike of Marken and the sea dike.

The area is best reached by car or bicycle. From Monnickendam the seawall can be followed to Marken so that several beautiful viewpoints can be passed.
