Dwingelderveld National Park is the largest wet heathland area in Western Europe. Wet depressions and high sand ridges alternate in the extensive Dwingelderveld. You will find heather, forest, juniper groves, drifting sand and more than forty fens. The national park covers an area of 3,700 hectares. Woodpeckers, birds of prey and typical heather birds such as the Saltimpalo and Tottavilla. Svasso piccolo and Tuffetto breed in the pools. The Gru has also been breeding on the Dwingelderveld for several years. Furthermore, it is really an area of forest birds like Succiacapre, Averla piccola, different types of woodpeckers, Zigolo giallo, Prispolone, Cuculo , Corvo imperiale, Rigogolo, Crociere comune and many more birds. See the extensive birdlist below. This wide, open spaced area is also designated as a Natura 2000-area. Besides a visiting Aquila di mare , one can also find in the winter a Averla maggiore.

Nederlands: Nationaal Park Dwingelderveld is het grootste natte heidegebied van West-Europa. Natte laagtes – slenken genoemd – en hoge zandruggen wisselen elkaar af in het uitgestrekte Dwingelderveld. Je vindt er heide, bos, jeneverbesbosjes, stuifzand en ruim veertig vennen. Het nationaal park heeft een oppervlakte van 3.700 hectare. Spechten, roofvogels en typische heidevogels zoals de roodborsttapuit en boomleeuwerik. Geoorde fuut en dodaars broeden in de vennen. Sinds enkele jaren broedt ook de kraanvogel op het Dwingelderveld. Verder is het echt een gebied van bosvogels: Nachtzwaluw, grauwe klauwier, verschillende soorten spechten, geelgors, boompieper, wielewaal, koekoek, raaf, kruisbek en nog veel meer vogels. A good starting point for exploring the Dwingelderveld is the visitor center at 22 Benderse, Ruinen. Click on the P in the map for directions. There are many different walking tours to make. The walk on the map below is 10.5 km and also passes a bird hide.

Nederlands: Een goed startpunt voor het ontdekken van het Dwingelderveld is het bezoekerscentrum aan de Benderse 22, Ruinen. Klik op de P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving. Er zijn veel verschillende wandeltochten te maken. Op de wandeling op de kaart beneden is 10,5 km en komt ook langs een vogelkijkhut.
