Description

The Roode Weel is a large body of water between narrow creeks, which was created after a dike breach. The nature reserve is 41 hectares in size and is a remnant of a creek system in the Polder Cruijsland. There are always many water birds on the Roode Weel. The wide reed borders are the breeding area of, among others, Western Marsh Harrier, Sedge Warbler and Water Rail. Little Owl breeds in the pollard willows. The bird watching screen on the north side offers an unobstructed view of the various birds. The bird watching screen has shutters at various heights and angles and is easily accessible, especially on a bicycle. Don't expect anything exotic, especially the chance of more common birds such as Eurasian Wigeon, Mute Swan, Tufted Duck, Common Buzzard, Barn Swallow, Cetti's Warbler, Common Chiffchaff, Common Teal and Great Crested Grebe.
