Description
The Meilanden is located on the east side of highway A50. Due to its proximity to the river Linge, this wet meadow area is an excellent stopping place, especially for the first returning Black-tailed Godwit and Common Redshank after their long journey from Africa. When the birds have regained strength, most pairs will populate the surrounding area to breed. Others move further north. In 2020, there were about 40 pairs of Black-tailed Godwit and 25 pairs of Common Redshank in the Meilanden, making this area an important one for the meadow birds in the region.
Measures such as pumping water onto the meadows, postponed mowing policy, raw manure instead of slurry, flowery mixtures and nest protection must all lead to the preservation of this typical Dutch landscape, rich in meadow birds. In addition to Black-tailed Godwit and Common Redshank, other birds that nest in this area include Northern Lapwing, Eurasian Curlew, Eurasian Oystercatcher and Eurasian Skylark. Other birds that you may encounter with a bit of luck are Little Ringed Plover, Western Yellow Wagtail, Spotted Redshank, Common Snipe, Ruff, Grey Partridge, Garganey and Eurasian Spoonbill.

Nederlands: De Meilanden zijn gelegen aan de oostkant van de A50 bij Valburg. Door de nabijheid van de Linge is dit plas-dras gebied een uitstekende pleisterplaats voor met name voor de eerste grutto’s en tureluurs na hun lange reis uit Afrika. Wanneer de vogels in de plas-dras weer op sterkte zijn gekomen zullen de meeste paartjes de omringende Meilanden gaan bevolken om er te gaan broeden. Anderen trekken nog verder noordwaarts. In de Meilanden zaten in 2020 zo’n 40 paar grutto’s en 25 paar tureluurs, waarmee dit gebied een belangrijke functie voor de weidevogels in de regio vervuld.
Maatregelen als water op de weilanden pompen, uitgesteld maaibeleid, ruwe mest in plaats van drijfmest, bloemrijke mengsels en nestbescherming moeten allemaal leiden tot het behoud van het typische Hollandse landschap, rijk aan weidevogels. In dit weidevogelgebied broeden behalve grutto en tureluur o.m. kievit, wulp, scholekster en veldleeuwerik. Andere vogels die je met een beetje geluk kunt aantreffen zijn de kleine plevier, gele kwikstaart, zwarte ruiter, watersnip, kemphaan, patrijs, zomertaling en lepelaar.
