Among the breeding birds are Black Stork, Red Kite, Black Kite, Short-toed Snake Eagle, European Honey-buzzard, Stone-curlew, Eurasian Nightjar, European Roller, Calandra Lark, Greater Short-toed Lark, Wood Lark, Tawny Pipit, Dartford Warbler, Red-backed Shrike, Lesser Grey Shrike and Ortolan Bunting. The area includes some nature reserves (Monterano, Marturanum, Faggeta di Allumiere, Caldara di Manziana), hunting areas and villages.
It's possible to reach the area by car, train (Rome-Civitavecchia and Rome-Viterbo railways) or bus. The villages of Allumiere, Tolfa, Canale Monterano an Barbarano Romano are the best starting points to explore Tolfa hills hiking or mountainbiking. A 10 km circular walk departing from the village of Tolfa is indicated on the map.
