This route offers different habitats ranging from steppe grassland to open water and thus a wide variety of bird species.
Meksikópuszta is located in the Fertő-Hanság National Park in North-West Hungary at the south-eastern edge of Lake Neusiedl (HU: Fertő tó). Though relatively small, it comprises a variety of landscapes from lake shore and reed belts to the typical Hungarian puszta (Pannonian steppes). The birds you can encounter here include several species of geese and ducks e.g., husa velká, čírka modrá, lžičák pestrý, zrzohlávka rudozobá, polák malý; waders such as jespák bojovný, pisila čáponohá, tenkozobec opačný, vodouš šedý, vodouš rudonohý, vodouš tmavý, kulík říční, koliha velká, břehouš černoocasý; reed warblers; herons; raptors including moták pochop, orel mořský, ostříž lesní, sokol stěhovavý; vlha pestrá, dudek chocholatý, ťuhýk obecný and konipas luční are regularly seen in spring and summer and occasionally bramborníček hnědý and bramborníček černohlavý can be spotted. kamenáček pestrý, jespák rezavý and jespák písečný are among rarities that can be encountered in autumn.
It takes about 2,5 hours by car from Budapest but it is merely a 40 min drive from the birdingplaces in neighbouring Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park in Austria.
The southern part of the route follows a path along a small channel and contains 2 small lookout platforms. Another platform is located next to the 8521 road. Unfortunately there is no footpath along the road but usually there is not much traffic so it is safe to walk or ride a bike.
