Lake Almyros is one of the most important wetlands of western Crete. In the lake you can find many aquatic birds. The lake is not only worth a visit for waterfowl. In Georgioupoulis I found the largest Andorinha-das-chaminés roost I have seen so far! Among the other birds you can encounter are Perna-verde-comum, Maçarico-bastardo, Narceja-comum, Maçarico-das-rochas, Pássaro-bique-bique, Guarda-rios-comum, Andorinhão-real, Garça-branca-pequena, Gaivota-de-patas-amarelas, Pintassilgo, Pardal-italiano and Rouxinol-bravo.
