A site for Mediterranean Gull, Sandwich Tern, and Zitting Cisticola.
Alexandros Salt Pans are clearly no longer used for salt production. There are several small lagoons by the beach at the south side and the tarmac road follows the beach. A good dirt track continues along the embankment all the way, finishing as a dead end after 2.4 kilometres.
I visited the site in September during high tide (a dozen of both Mediterranean Gull and Sandwich Tern, Yellow-legged Gull, Caspian Tern, Pygmy Cormorant and Great Cormorant, Little Egret, Zitting Cisticola), was somewhat surprised by the low number of birds, so I returned during low tide, only to find even fewer birds and not a single shorebird.
Local eBird hotspot also mention Cetti's Warbler, Red-rumped Swallow, Dalmatian Pelican, Greater Flamingo, Little Tern, Pallid Swift, Kentish Plover, Whimbrel, Common Redshank, and Common Greenshank.
Alexandros Salt Pans lie by the hamlet of Kariotes and are invisible from the road. Yet, the lagoon is visible on the Google Maps, so set your GPS to lead you to the Villa Olga, or click on the "P" in the map for directions.
