Even though the Mindel lake (and its surrounding reed belts and forested slopes) is a relatively small birding area, the number of species is remarkably high.
The small lake Mindelsee and its diversely structured shores host the highest number of breeding species in the whole region of Lake Constance (Bodensee).
The Ferruginous Duck can be observed in autumn. A colony of Common Tern nests on rafts in the lake. Also Water Rail, Black Kite, Red-crested Pochard, Black Woodpecker, Grey-headed Woodpecker, Eurasian Green Woodpecker, Middle Spotted Woodpecker, Tree Pipit, Savi's Warbler, Reed Warbler, Common Nightingale and Golden Oriole can be observed in breeding period. In winter Great Bittern and Goosander may be of interest.
Access by public transport: There is a bus from Radolfzell station to Möggingen. Markelfingen also has a train station.
Access by car: The most convenient parking lot is on the road between Radolfzell and Möggingen: "Parkplatz Mindelsee". Click on the P in the map to get directions. The circular trail around the lake that is shown on the map is about 9 km.
