Wetlands, meadows and woodland along the river Elbe with many storks, geese and other water birds.
Grippel is a village in Lower Saxony and lies on the river Elbe. Next to the village lies the Grippeler See, a wetland where you can see many birds. Between Grippel and village of Langendorf there is also an observation tower. This is in the three-country triangle: Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Brandenburg. If you climb the tower, you get a wonderful view over the Elbe. Among the birds you can see are White Stork, Black Stork, Red Kite, Black Kite, Common Crane, Grey Heron, Great Egret and many ducks, geese and other water birds.
Easy accessible. Click on the P in the map to get directions.
Grippel is part of the 'Deutsche Storchenstraße' (the 'German Stork Way', see the link below) and part of the UNESCO Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve, one of the largest in Europe with around 340,000 hectares.
