This former gravel pit was transformed by the river Fulda, so that over time a wide variety of habitats for breeding and migratory birds emerged.
The Forbachsee is a nature reserve on the middle reaches of the river Fulda and part of the bird sanctuary 'Fuldatal zwischen Rotenburg und Niederaula'. When there were still a lot of fallow land and muddy areas, there were numerous landfills. As a result of succession, a riparian forest has now emerged on the banks, attracting many duck species in particular.
The Forbachsee is located 3 km south of the town Rotenburg an der Fulda. You can reach the lake through the cycle path that leads past the western side of the lake.
