Description
The Baggersee Grötzingen is a former gravel pit that is now part nature reserve, part recreational (fishing, bathing zone). In winter there are usually good numbers of Tufted Duck, Gadwall, Common Teal, Great Crested Grebe, Grey Heron and Great Cormorant. They are sometimes joined by smaller numbers or individual Common Pochard, Common Goldeneye, Northern Shoveler or Mandarin Duck.
Most years, some more uncommon or rare species appear at some point during the winter. In recent years, Greater Scaup, Red-necked Grebe, Common Scoter and Velvet Scoter have all been seen here. The woods surrounding the lake are a good place to look out for less common woodland species, such as Grey-headed Woodpecker, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and Hawfinch.
