Beschreibung

Lake Paliastomi is separated from the Black Sea by a 2-kilometer-wide sandbar, however, according to historical sources, it used to be a bay of the Black Sea. The lake has an average depth of 2.6 meters and is connected to the Black Sea by a narrow channel. The lake is part of the ecologically important Kolkheti Wetland complex. The area is known for its rich biodiversity and an important stopping and overwintering place for migratory birds. The lake itself is not accessible but there are some viewpoints along the shores of the lake. The lake is large and the birds can be far away, so a telescope is recommended.

The lake is very good for observing different species of terns, especially during autumn migration. Other birds you can encounter are Purpurreiher, Nachtreiher, Eisvogel, Seeadler, Rohrweihe, Haubentaucher, Wasserralle, Flußregenpfeifer, Zwergmöwe, Dünnschnabelmöwe and Nachtigall.

Zugang

Lake Paliastomi is situated at the eastern coast of the Black Sea, southeast of the town of Poti, and 60 km north of the city of Batumi. The bridge over the Karparcha river on the northwestern tip of the lake gives good views. Although there is a pedestrian lane on the bridge separated by a fence, the road over the bridge has a lot of traffic and is a bit noisy. You can park on the side of the road but watch out for traffic. Another more quiet option is the western shore of the lake. Press a P on the map for directions to one of the viewpoints.
