Settling basins of a sugar factory. When the water levels of the basins are good, this is one of the best places in the region for waders.
At Sucrerie Erstein the conditions for the observation of birds are very much dependent on the water level of the settling basins of the factory. Right after the water has been drained and the water level is shallow, the basins are a great spot for waders and other waterfowl. The water level of each basin is independent from each other. So is hard to predict where and when the observation conditions are best. If you are lucky and the conditions are good, this places offers you a great opportunity for birdwatching.
The best time for observation is August and September when the wader migration reaches a peak. Then almost all common wader species can be seen here. More common species like Common Greenshank, Dunlin, Common Ringed Plover and many more can be spotted in the area while also rarer species like Temminck's Stint, Little Stint, Ruddy Turnstone and even Red-necked Phalarope have also been observed here. This abundance of wader species is very unususal in the region which makes this spot one of the best spots to look for waders in migration season.
Sucrerie Erstein is located between the town of Erstein and the river Rhine. The nearest trainstation is located in Erstein, five kilometers away. The observation spots are only accessible by foot or bike. Note that some of the settling basins can't be looked into because the area of the settling basins is private property of the sugar factory. The best way to get to the observation points is by bike.
