This complex of wetlands is a must-see for bird watching on the Ile d'Oléron.
The Lagunage de Saint-Denis d'Oléron and Grand Marais Papinaud have different loops to discover the area, the different habitats and the birds that live there. The lagoon is rich in birds throughout the year with several hundred Mute Swan, many species of ducks, Black Tern and Little Grebe). The reed bed is home to Common Kingfisher, Zitting Cisticola, Cetti's Warbler and other birds. The meadows are home to European Stonechat, Eurasian Kestrel, Northern Lapwing and Cattle Egret. The marsh allows the observation of shorebirds such as Common Sandpiper and Green Sandpiper. The route can be lengthened by going towards the sea, passing through a small dune wetland (large pond and reed bed) then along the foreshore to return to the lagoon. This detour widens the birds observed with coastal birds (Grey Plover, Common Ringed Plover, different waders and also Northern Wheatear).
