Bird observation tower near the Lauttasalmi bridge in the city of Hamina.
Lupinlahti consists of two separate sea bays, Purholmanselä and Lupinlahti, which are separated from each other by the Lauttasalmi bridge. The site is important because of the many birds that rest and breed in the area. The bird observation tower built on the Lupinlahti bay is a nice and easy accessible spot for birdwatching. Among the birds you can observe are Caspian Tern, Whooper Swan, Great Reed Warbler, Great Bittern, Common Goldeneye, Goosander, Common Crane, Northern Lapwing, Common Redshank, Little Gull, Eurasian Hobby, Western Marsh Harrier, Osprey and White-tailed Eagle
From the centre of Hamina, drive 2.5 kilometres along road 82 in the direction of Vaalimaa and turn to Vilniemi. The road continues for about 800m. The tower is on the right in the immediate vicinity of the Lauttasalmi bridge. There is a small parking lot right next to the bird tower. Click on the P in the map for directions. The tower has two levels. The first level can be reached by wheelchair.
