A shallow lake that is an important breeding area for waterbirds and stopping place for many migrating birds during spring and autumn.
Aarslev Engsø used to be a drained area and was re-established in 2003 by directing the water from the two rivers Aarhus Å and Lyngbygård Å over its meadows. The lake itself now covers an area of 100 hectares and is surrounded by meadows and reedbeds. Among the birds you can encounter are White-tailed Eagle, Osprey, Peregrine Falcon, Great Egret, Bluethroat, Bearded Tit, Gadwall and Garganey. Aarslev Engsø also attracts many uncommon birds that turn up regularly, for example Little Gull, Mediterranean Gull, Black Tern, Caspian Tern, Spotted Crake, Broad-billed Sandpiper, Red-necked Phalarope and Great Reed Warbler.
The area is a popular recreational area for people living in Aarhus, and is easily accessible, with a path leading round the lake (8 km). There are several observation points with good views of the area. Boards with maps and information have been set up at intervals around the lake. There are several car parks, from where there is access to the path round the lakes. Click on a P in the map to get directions to the parking of your choice.
