Description

On the the Solana Nin saltworks, you will find a small ornithological reserve. On these diverse fields around Solana Nin more than 280 species of birds have been spotted. Many migratory birds take a break here along the salt pans on their long-haul flights to their wintering grounds in Africa and further in the Mediterranean. But the salt pans also hold a good number of breeding birds like Black-winged Stilt, Kentish Plover and Little Egret. Other birds that can be observed are Little Tern, Eurasian Oystercatcher, Stone-curlew, Grey Plover, Common Redshank, Common Greenshank, Eurasian Curlew, Black-tailed Godwit, Curlew Sandpiper, Little Stint, Dunlin, Common Shelduck, Spotted Redshank, Little Ringed Plover, Common Ringed Plover and Avocet. In winter and early spring in the reedy pools on the east side of the salt pans (see map) sometimes Moustached Warbler is observed.

Access

The salt pans are located directly east of the old town of Nin. You can watch the salt pans from the roads that cross it and run around it. The best point is the observation platform on the west side of the salt pans. This point has a small parking lot. Click on a P in the map to get directions. Note that this observation platform has backlight in the morning, so the best light you have here in the late afternoon. The Solana Nin Saltworks can also be visited, but check openingtimes before you visit (see the link to the website below).
