Description

The Put van Vlissegem was created by the extraction of sand and clay and has salty water. Because the lake does not freeze over during the winter months, the lake attracts wintering water birds such as Eurasian Wigeon, Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Common Teal and Black-necked Grebe. Breeding birds include Sedge Warbler, Water Rail, Little Grebe, Common Shelduck and Tufted Duck. During migration there is a chance of seeing wading birds such as Spotted Redshank, Common Greenshank, Green Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper and Ruff. There is a bird hide on the western bank of the lake.
