The Ooigembos is the only historical forest in the Leie valley, bordered by a variety of habitats with a mix of bird species.
The Ooigembos is an old forest where forest anemones and bluebells still bloom, quite unique for South West Flanders. A walk through the forest and along the old meander of the river Leie leads through a varied landscape. In the Ooigembos you can find birds such as Great Spotted Woodpecker, Eurasian Green Woodpecker, Sparrowhawk, Eurasian Hobby, Blackcap, Garden Warbler and Eurasian Nuthatch. Along the old Leie arm you will find water birds such as Gadwall, Tufted Duck, Goosander, Great Crested Grebe, Water Rail, Common Kingfisher, Common Sandpiper, Great Cormorant and Little Bittern.

Easily accessible from Ooigem. A circular walk through both areas is approximately 5 km long. See the map for the route.
