Description

Montroeul-au-Bois, with its many agricultural fields dotted with bushes and hedges, is a very good site for observing small passerines typical of fields and meadows such as Bluethroat, Meadow Pipit, Yellowhammer, Marsh Warbler and Lesser Whitethroat. Other birds typical of agricultural areas can be observed in Montroeul. For example, Grey Partridge, Northern Lapwing, Common Quail or Common Pheasant.

The proximity to Pétrieu wood is also very interesting because you can observe quite a few forest birds there such as Sparrowhawk, Firecrest, Eurasian Jay, and Eurasian Nuthatch. In the surrounding hedges, there are a lot of Blackcap, a few Greater Whitethroat and some Garden Warbler.

Montroeul is also a very good place for the observation of owls such as Little Owl, Tawny Owl, Long-eared Owl and the rare Eagle Owl which sings in the spring in the depths of the wood. You can also find some wintering raptors such as Merlin and Hen Harrier.

Finally, the village is also a great place for spring and autumn migration. Many birds pass over the village in the spring. For example, European Honey-buzzard, White Stork, the rare Red Kite, Lesser Black-backed Gull and even, an an exceptional sighting, a Eurasian Black Vulture in the spring of 2023. Every spring many Ring Ouzel and Northern Wheatear stop to take a short break in their migration. The same goes for the autumn migration where squadrons of Redwing, Fieldfare and Mistle Thrush pass at full speed above the village, sometimes even making prolonged halts.
