The Bergenmeersen is a nature reserve part of the Flemish Sigma Plan with controlled reduced tide to protect the region from floods.
The controlled tides of the Scheldt river give this birding spot some interesting characteristics. As the Bergenmeersen is quite far inland the brackish water and the tidal movement shape this area in a unique salt marsh and mudflats. During migration periods these mudflats attract wader birds like Black-tailed Godwit , Avocet , Common Sandpiper , Common Greenshank , Spotted Redshank , Wood Sandpiper , Dunlin. On the wooden path that runs trough the area it's possible to see Penduline Tit and Bearded Tit in the reed beds (mostly during winter). Warblers like Grasshopper Warbler , Bluethroat , Sedge Warbler and Reed Warbler are easily to be heard from this wooden path during spring and early summer.
Parking can be found at the cemetery of Wichelen. Click on the P in the map to get directions.
