The species-rich floodplain forest of the Weitwörther Au has been restored through renaturation.
The Weitwörther Au is the core area of 350 hectare of the 1,140 hectare Natura 2000 site Salzachauen. The species-rich floodplain forest has been restored through renaturation. In the process, the Reitbach stream was lowered. Along a pleasant 4 km circular trail, panels provide information on flora and fauna and you pass a bird hide. Among the birds you can encounter are Common Kingfisher, Great Egret, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Common Cuckoo, Black-headed Gull, Marsh Tit, Common Teal, Blackcap, Reed Warbler and if you are lucky Golden Oriole. You have a good chance for bird photography because the birds can be very near. But you must get up early in the morning to get a Common Kingfisher or other specific birds.
The Weitwörther Au is located a few kilometers north of the city of Salzburg, close to the village of Weitwörth. Easy accessible by train from Salzburg to the Weitwörth train station. If you arrive by car you can park at the Weitwörth or Pabing train station. Click on a P in the map for directions to one of the parkings. From the parkings it's a short walk to the Weitwörther Au. The trail is signposted from the car park.
