Description

The Dragositschacher Bucht is a beautiful area next to the Drau river, consisting of a wide variety of habitats. The main area consists of several ponds and reedbeds. On the southern edge, the area is bordered by a small forested area, and on the northern side, the Drau river is located. The area is great for observing waterbirds, which winter here in large numbers. Species like Common Pochard, Tufted Duck, Eurasian Coot and Mute Swan can be seen in large numbers. Rarer species, like Smew, Goosander and Common Goldeneye, can mainly be observed in winter here. On several spots, groups of Yellow-legged Gull, Great Cormorant and Black-headed Gull rest on the shorelines.

During the breeding season, the reedbeds are great for many species of songbird, like Reed Bunting, Marsh Warbler, Reed Warbler and Great Reed Warbler. Also larger species, like Water Rail and Little Grebe, breed here. The open shorelines with pebbles are great for Little Ringed Plover.

Just after the breeding season, large flocks of Penduline Tit tend to be seen here. They forage in the lower levels of the reedbeds, and sometimes popup to give a show.

On the eastern side, the area is accessible by walking around on sanded paths. At the parking spot, you need to enter an extraction area which doesn't look accessible, but eventually you'll find a path that leads you to the main reedbed area. Just follow the path on the map.
