An oasis of parkland with Red Gum grassy woodlands, heathland and wetlands, nestled amongst golf courses, urban development and busy roads.
Braeside Park is an oasis of parkland nestled amongst golf courses, urban development and busy roads. As you stroll through the park’s Red Gum grassy woodlands, heathland and around the wetlands, it's easy to forget you're surrounded by the suburbs. Braeside Park Wetlands Circuit trail provides visitors with a number of wetlands viewing opportunities and to observe the many varied bird species that reside in the park.
The trail travels through open Red Gum and Manna Gum bushland area to the north east of the wetlands, with more grassy vegetation along the south western edge. This trail has two different surface components including granitic sand and mown grass. The grass portion is an uneven surface and can become slippery and wet during the winter period of the year. The Wetland circuit is a 5 km trail, during the warmer months snakes live in and around the wetlands so be carefull.
If you want to go beyond the wetlands, the park itself is 165 hectares, you can walk, jog or cycle along the multi purpose trails. Walk where Phar Lap's hooves pounded the turf along the historic race course trail. Stroll through the park’s Red Gum grassy woodlands, heathland and around the wetlands. A series of complex and valuable environmental communities find their home here. Discover the diverse range of bird life, listen for frogs or search for an echidna.
It's my happy place, a place to unwind and search for birds to photograph and observe. Among the birds you can observe are Blue-billed Duck, Freckled Duck, Hardhead, Rainbow Lorikeet, Pink-eared Duck, Fan-tailed Cuckoo, Nankeen Night-Heron, Great Egret, Buff-banded Rail, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Tawny Frogmouth, Wedge-tailed Eagle and Australian Pelican.
Braeside Park is part of an Aboriginal cultural landscape in the traditional Country of the Bunurong People. Parks Victoria respects the deep and continuing connection that Bunurong Traditional Owners have to these lands and waters, and we recognise their ongoing role in caring for Country.
Braeside Park is open from sunrise to sunset. One-way spikes at the Lower Dandenong Road exit allow you to enjoy the park and leave at your leisure. The Governor Road entrance closes at 4pm daily. The Visitor Centre is usually open on weekends and school holidays. Press P on the map for directions to a parking.
