Urban wetland of 31 hectares located within the south west city of Bunbury.
The Big Swamp is an urban wetland that provides important habitat and refuge for many native species including the Long-necked (or Snake-necked) Turtle and many birds. It is therefore recognised as a regionally significant conservation and recreation area. The wetland is popular with bird enthusiasts and there are a number of lookouts. It is visited by over 80 species of birds, and is a home to waterbirds such as the Australasian Swamphen, Australian Pelican, Yellow-billed Spoonbill, Australasian Grebe, Maned Duck, Australian Shelduck, Black-fronted Dotterel, Australian White Ibis and Straw-necked Ibis.
The Big Swamp is located on Prince Philip Drive in South Bunbury and adjacent to the Bunbury Wildlife Park and Cafe. The area is surrounded by the Big Swamp Walk, an easy, 2 km bitumen and boardwalk trail. It is suitable for walkers, cyclists, prams, wheelchairs and dogs on leash. There are toilets, seating and car parking. Press P on the map for directions to the parking.
