Description

Nestled along the banks of the River Great Ouse, Godmanchester Recreation Ground is a hidden gem for birdwatchers. The mix of flowing water, reedbeds, open grassland, and wooded edges creates a rich and varied habitat that attracts an array of bird species throughout the year. In spring and summer, the air is alive with the songs of Common Chiffchaff and Blackcap, while Barn Swallow and House Martin dart over the river. As autumn sets in, flocks of finches and tits move through the trees, and the occasional Green Sandpiper may be spotted along the water’s edge.

Winter brings a different charm, with Tufted Duck and Goosander gliding across the river and Redwing feasting on berries in the hedgerows. The grasslands are particularly appealing to ground-feeding birds like wagtails and finches, while insects thriving in the meadows draw swallows and other aerial feeders in the warmer months. Whether you're an experienced birder or just enjoy watching nature unfold, this peaceful riverside spot offers something special in every season.
