Description

Weymouth gets very busy during the Summer peak holiday season and is best avoided during this time. Weymouth Harbour is protected by The Nothe and Pavilion Piers, two Easterly projecting peninsulas giving excellent views of the bay. During Winter Harle huppé, Eider à duvet, Macreuse noire, Grèbe huppé and Plongeon imbrin are the most common, smaller numbers of Plongeon catmarin, Plongeon arctique, Harelde boréale, Grèbe esclavon, Grèbe à cou noir, Grèbe jougris, Guillemot de Troïl and Pingouin torda can be expected. During Spring returning Sterne caugek, Sterne pierregarin and Sterne naine are usually seen. During periods of prolonged freezing conditions Fuligule milouinan, Harle piette and Harle bièvre seek out the bays sheltered conditions. During Autumn Nothe Gardens can hold Roitelet triple-bandeau, Gobemouche noir and Traquet motteux (an early morning visit is best). Autumn gales especially from the East can give seabirds such as Océanite tempête, Mouette pygmée and Mouette de Sabine. Weymouth Bay has an extremely large Mouette rieuse roost during Winter months. From Pavilion Pier check carefully through the flock for more unusual species.
