Description

A large area of woodland managed by the Forestry Commission, whilst the woodland is mostly coniferous, there are areas of deciduous trees for added interest.

(*1) (press STAR on map), the woodland North of the car park is called Park Wood, this ever changing part of woodland has some clear-felled areas with scrubland making it good for Rossignol philomèle and Locustelle tachetée, other clear areas have Pipit des arbres, Pouillot fitis, Fauvette des jardins, Fauvette grisette, Bouvreuil pivoine and Bruant jaune. At dusk Bécasse des bois and Chouette hulotte are a distinct possibility. Dense areas of conifers have Mésange noire, Roitelet triple-bandeau and Roitelet huppé.

(*2), the long central firebreak consisting of conifers and some good areas of deciduous trees, can have Tourterelle des bois, Gobemouche gris and Coucou gris during Summer. Later in the year the ever secretive Bécasse des bois can also be found here. More mature conifer areas have Roitelet triple-bandeau, Roitelet huppé, Mésange noire and Tarin des aulnes, listen out for the calls of Bec-croisé des sapins high-up in the canopy.

(*3), farmland and hedgerows on the Eastern side of the woodland (there is a short out and back footpath), can have Fauvette grisette, Fauvette babillarde, Pouillot fitis, with Martinet noir and Hirondelle rustique feeding over fields in Summer. Bruant jaune, Linotte mélodieuse , Chardonneret élégant and Bouvreuil pivoine can be found here, check field edges for Perdrix rouge and Chevêche d'Athéna.

(*4), this Hedgecock Wood section of both woodland and open fields has Chouette hulotte, Pic vert, Pic épeiche, Pigeon colombin, Grive draine, Grimpereau des bois, Geai des chênes, Mésange nonnette, Mésange à longue queue. During Spring/Summer expect Rossignol philomèle, Coucou gris and Tourterelle des bois.
