The Skern and Northam Burrows Country Park is in North Devon and is on the South side of the mouth of the Taw/Torridge Estuary.
Northam Burrows Country Park is part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The Skern is on it's North East edge. The area comprises of a pebble ridge, sand dunes, saltmarsh, grassy plain, remnants of a municipal tip and a golf course. The area is recognized as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, as well as being an important site for birds. It is also known for nationally rare plants and insects. Following periods of heavy rain the country park can have areas of marshy flooded pools that are worth checking for birds.
Leave Barnstaple (just to the East) on the A39 signed Bideford, on crossing the River Torridge bridge at next roundabout take the third exit signed Appledore A386 (Heywood Road), continue on the A386, on passing the football ground (on the right) immediately turn left onto Broad Lane, at next crossroads continue straight on into Burrows Lane, this eventually brings you to The Skern, continue on this road with a number of stopping places overlooking the estuary, the car park is at the end of this road. Park here to explore the Country Park. The route you see on the map is about 6 km.
BE WARNED. The three roads onto Northam Burrows Country Park are gated (fee payable), these gates are LOCKED AT NIGHT Summer open 0700 - 2200hrs and Winter open 0700 - 1800hrs (November to March.)
Northam Burrows CP has open access (on foot only) with many footpaths, the Westward Ho! beach area gets VERY busy during summer months. BEWARE of golfers DO NOT encroach onto golf course.
