Description

Sheviock (locally pronounced Shiv-uck) comes from the Cornish language meaning 'strawberry bed', sits astride the A374 approximately 5 miles from the town of Torpoint to the East. This (now rarely visited by birdwatchers) walk slowly climbs through a tree lined footpath towards the slightly larger village of Crafthole, nearing this village is a bit of a surprise, appearing amongst the trees is a relatively large lake, once a former reservoir now a fishing lake where there are some large Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) apparently, Sarcelle d'été are often found here in Spring, often only staying a few days. More common are Canard colvert, Fuligule morillon, Grèbe huppé, Grèbe castagneux and Gallinule poule-d'eau.

The walk continues to the village of Crafthole passing allotment gardens, turn Right and return to Sheviock on a narrowish road that has little traffic use. Bruant proyer used to be on the sites bird list, unfortunately this county rarity is no longer seen here, Bruant zizi can still be seen on site with the occasional sightings of Fauvette pitchou probably pushed here by inclement weather from it's normal habitat close to the South.

Accès

The A 374 from Torpoint in the East to Liskeard further to the West goes straight through Sheviock. For those traveling by car, park next to A374 by church gate, beside red telephone box and bus shelter. This parking spot usually only has room for two cars. Both Sheviock and Crafthole are served by buses from Plymouth (further to the East), this bus service is rather infrequent. The circular walk is about 1,8 mile.
