Description

Longrock Beach car park (Fee Payable - Monday to Saturday 0800hrs - 1600hrs, free at other times), is accessible by crossing a railway crossing, BE AWARE DO NOT attempt to cross if WARNING LIGHTS are flashing. Due to West Cornwalls mild weather Hirondelle rustique can sometimes be found near car park even in Winter. Eastern Green on the outskirts of the large town of Penzance is known for it's sometimes very large congregation of Gulls (Laridae) especially during Spring/Autumn/Winter months, check flocks for more unusual species such as Mouette tridactyle, Mouette pygmée, Goéland à bec cerclé, Goéland bourgmestre, Goéland à ailes blanches and Mouette mélanocéphale. An indication of what could turn up is Mouette de Bonaparte, Mouette atricille, Mouette de Franklin and Mouette de Ross that have all been seen in the past. Be sure to check out Penzance Harbour, NOTE access may be restricted during busy working hours when boats are unloading.

Battery Rocks, on the seaward side of Penzance Jubilee Swimming Pool is the best place in Cornwall for Bécasseau violet and high tide roosting Bécasseau sanderling during Winter (DO NOT disturb roosting birds by using lower walkway at high tide). Mounts Bay and beach is mostly sandy is South facing, being quite sheltered from the prevailing South West winds. Waders can be low in number with the occasional Grand Gravelot, Barge rousse, Huîtrier pie and Pluvier argenté. At sea in the bay Plongeon imbrin, Plongeon arctique, Macreuse noire, Eider à duvet, Grèbe huppé, Grèbe esclavon and possibly Harelde boréale. During Spring look for Sterne caugek, Sterne pierregarin, Sterne arctique and the possibility of Sterne de Dougall.
