The Hessenford Valley is in South East Cornwall.

Description

The village of Hessenford (originally Hestonford) lies on the main A387 road from Looe (to the West) and Plymouth (to the East), the River Seaton runs through the heavily wooded valley, to the North runs the main A38 from Plymouth (to the East) and Liskeard (to the West) passes the valley, a narrow road (hardly used) runs the full length of the valley between the two.

Whilst the birds are of more common species, this is the place in South East Cornwall to be for International Dawn Chorus Day on the first Sunday in May each year, be sure to arrive early, 0400hrs is the best time for the full effect.

Some birds you can expect to see, or hear if you're doing the Dawn Chorus are Rougegorge familier, Pinson des arbres, Pigeon ramier, Pouillot véloce, Tourterelle turque​,Fauvette à tête noire, Merle noir, Mésange charbonnière, Troglodyte mignon and Mésange nonnette.

From Plymouth leave Westwards on A38 following signs to Liskeard, passing through Saltash, Landrake and Tideford, continue on this road and on approaching Trerulefoot roundabout, after going under stone railway bridge, take third exit signed Liskeard A38. Continue on this road and on long sweeping Right hand bend take Left hand turn signed Castle Air Charters/Trebrownbridge, turn Left at junction and park at end of road beside Helicopter Landing Area.

If traveling from Liskeard on A38, continue and on passing Merrymert/Doddycross/Menheniot sign road goes down hill, be prepared to turn using Right hand slip road, turn here signed Castle Air Charters, turn Left at junction and park at end of road beside Helicopter Landing Area.

For those making an early start during darkness, make sure you have a headtorch or torch, the walk is completely unlit, even though the road is little used HI-VI clothing would be an advantage.
