Description

A gentle walk from Bodmin Parkway Railway Station alongside the River Fowey to Respryn Bridge and return. Bodmin Parkway Railway Station is on the Paddington to Penzance mainline, the station is situated at the Western end of the of the heavily wooded Glynn Valley. With the Liskeard to Bodmin main A38 road running along it's length, the River Fowey (pronounced Foy) runs through the valley and is usually reasonably gentle here, where Cincle plongeur, Martin-pêcheur d'Europe and Bergeronnette des ruisseaux can be expected. Of course following periods of heavy rain especially in Autumn/Winter the river can become a bit of a raging torrent and those birds may move elsewhere to feed.

Leave Bodmin Parkway Station car park (fee payable) passing through red gate (signed Lanhyderock - National Cycle Network route 3), on quieter Summer mornings Fauvette à tête noire can be heard singing here along with the persistent 'Chaff-Chiff-Chiff-Chaff' call of the Pouillot véloce, continue on this footpath/cyclepath that passes through a tunnel under the mainline.

(*1), press STAR on map, in late Autumn and Winter the open areas here may have Grive mauvis, in Summer Hirondelle rustique and Hirondelle de fenêtre can be seen feeding here, occasionally very close to the ground, a sign of bad weather on the way. Wooded areas may have more Fauvette à tête noire and Pouillot véloce in Summer, but more usual are Mésange bleue, Mésange charbonnière and Pigeon colombin. Cross the River Fowey on a bridge and look for Cincle plongeur and Bergeronnette des ruisseaux (if the water is low), the wooded path then turns West, take a Left turn path that runs alongside the river.

(*2). The path beside the river is best described as 'rugged' with many tree roots and holes, depending on season it can become very wet and slippery, this path gives occasional views of the river where you get another chance of Cincle plongeur and Bergeronnette des ruisseaux may be even a Martin-pêcheur d'Europe, a pair of Bernache du Canada seem to like this area as well.

(*3). As you approach the Respryn car park (fee payable), in Summer Bergeronnette de Yarrell actively hunt for insects among the parked cars, in Winter more Grive mauvis 'patrol' the open areas. Grive litorne are a bit of a rarity here. Leave the car park and walk along the road (usually little traffic) towards Respryn Bridge.

(*4). Respryn Bridge, this old bridge, King Charles I traveled across it in 1644, now only has the old original middle arch. The other arches are all slightly newer, another chance of Cincle plongeur, Martin-pêcheur d'Europe and Bergeronnette des ruisseaux from here, for those with more time you can continue following river downstream by a footpath on the Southern side (marked with a red sign No Cyclist Or Horses Pedestrians Only).
