Description

The Marine Nature Study Area (MNSA) is a 52-acre preserve that is devoted to environmental education and natural history in Oceanside NY. The MNSA is a salt marsh, with various wetland and mudflat habitat. Elevated board walkways have been constructed to provide access. To date, a total of 287 bird species have been observed and recorded in the area. The area is especially good for shorebirds such as Least Sandpiper, Semipalmated Plover, Red Knot (spring) and rails such as Clapper Rail, Virginia Rail, Sora (summer). My high score for species here in one day is 37, extremely high for marsh habitat in an urban environment.

Access

The Marine Nature Study Area is located on Slice Drive in Oceanside, New York. Although the MNSA is hard to access without a car, it is very rewarding. Parking is available around the entrance and in the neighborhood nearby. Press P in the map for directions. There is a bus stop 2 km away, which is not favorable, but ok if you want to walk.

The Marine Nature Study Area is open Tuesday to Saturday year-round, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (trails close at 4:30 PM). It’s closed on Sundays, Mondays, and holidays. A mile of dirt trails and elevated board walkways leads to eight designated observation and study sites equipped with visual aides.
