Description
Lake Sommen is quite deep and most of the lake is ice-free all-winter. During this period large amounts of Крех великий, Гоголь зеленоголовий and Пірникоза велика winter in Sommen. Sometimes in the hundreds. Among these Чернь чубата, Лебідь-шипун, Лебідь-кликун, Лиска звичайна, and Мартин сивий can often be found. The lake is also home to quite a few rarer wintering birds like Гагара чорношия, Крех середній, Беркут, Синьга, Турпан, Рибалочка блакитний, Гагара червоношия and Мартин звичайний.
During the spring migration marine ducks can be found in the lake. At the same time Гагара червоношия, and Гагара чорношия, arrive at the lake. Гагара чорношия breeds in the lake while Гагара червоношия feeds in the lake and breeds in small neighbouring lakes. The rare Гагара білодзьоба has been seen. Sommen archipelago hosts large colonies of Крячок річковий, Мартин сивий, Мартин звичайний, Мартин сріблястий, Чапля сіра and Баклан великий. Among these some rare birds like Клуша, and Крячок полярний can be seen.
The large decidous forests around sommen especially on Torpön host plenty of quite rare birds like: Мухоловка мала, Дятел малий, Горіхівка крапчаста, and Сова вухата. Around Sommen there is also old conifer forests around which support large populations of woodpeckers. Крутиголовка звичайна, Зелений дятел, Жовна чорна, Дятел малий, Дятел трипалий (very rare), Дятел звичайний and Дятел білоспинний (extinct in the area) have all been recorded. Other otherwise rare forrest birds found here are: Орябок лісовий Глушець білодзьобий, Тетерук євразійський (Rocks mosse), and Горіхівка крапчаста.
During the autumn birds can be seen migrating through the lake. Most common are the doves, finches, terns, and waders. At Rocks mosse Тетерук євразійський and Глушець білодзьобий breed. At Visskvarn there are rapids where Пронурок біловолий, and Плиска гірська can be seen.
